Sebum?! Eww.

Isn't it just like Science to have ridiculous names for things? Maybe it's due to the Latin origins of these terms, I mean, it isn't as if they knew we'd be cracking jokes or cringing at the names of things and conditions centuries later.
Turdus Maximus, Angina, Fukalite, Cummingtonite, Galactic Bulge to name a few.  These are 100% legit and laughable, but then you get to words that immediately induce a gag reflex out of nowhere: fungus, excretion, pus, vulva, cyst, moist, mucus, discharge, goiter and my personal favourite, sebum. Ew.

I'll give you a moment to compose yourself, go ahead, deep breath. Well done, you.

As icky as that exercise was and as gross as sebum may sound, there are ways to combat oily skin, which is what too much sebum causes. Generally you suffer from excess oil production because of your genetics and hormonal surges (ugh, that's going on the list), but there are TONS of articles online that suggest dietary adjustments can make a huge difference, as will the million and one products to control the excess oil your face is carrying around. As I suffer from oily skin in the summer months, let me guide you to what has been working for me:

1- WASH YOUR FACE, THEN MOISURIZE IT. I've been leaning towards more organic and natural skin care for my face for the past couple of years, especially as my skin is getting older and requires more moisture (ugh, gross). I wash my face with Andalou's Lemon Sugar face scrub. It's the mildest of scrubs, which we have all experienced a drying effect when using most scrubs on the daily, but this one is gentle and contains Argan stem cells (they benefit our skin's stem cells, contain 1,000 times the antioxidants to other botanical extracts and penetrate the dermis better than other plant stem cells) and Manuka honey (antibacterial properties and soothing to the skin) as well as Meyer Lemon to refresh and revitalize. I follow up with Andalou's Beta Hydroxy Recovery Cream. It's light and my skin drinks it up without leaving a greasy film in its wake.
You can find Andalou's entire product offering online, naturally, but also at most local health food stores.  www.andalou.com

2- STOP touching your face. No, really, stop.
3- Drink lots of water. Staying hydrated is essential for healthy skin. If you want to combat sebum through your diet, awesome! Ideally remove all dairy, refined carbs, sugar, inflammatory fats, salt and alcohol. BUT if you want to actually enjoy your summer fetes, then focus on creating a balance rather than removing everything at once and transforming into an oil free rage monster. Eliminate the items that are easier to remove and minimize the rest that way you'll actually achieve your goals rather than trying to have it all and falling to failure. Keep it real, girl. You can still have a wine and cheese night with your friends, it just can't be EVERY night.
