Turning 40 and The Legend of The Kaftan

I turned 40 while I was living in Dubai, wearing a sombrero and the most beautiful Kaftan I've ever owned.
Maybe the sombrero isn't the style statement you want to make as you elegantly welcome this fabulous decade of your life, but it paired well with the high-end Mexican dinner on the beach that night, so don't judge. But the Kaftan is one of the most essential fashion pieces in my wardrobe come the warm weather, albeit there was nothing but warm days and nights in the Arabian Gulf. I will, on occasion, float around my flat in the dead of winter with one on, instantly transporting me to sun filled times.

The abaya style kaftan in the picture is from a UAE design house called Ayaso Boutique. (www.ayasoboutique.com
Though it is open similar to a robe, it can easily be worn in a myriad of ways with the addition of a tie here or a broach there, or even snap buttons added in a genius and simple alteration. They specialize in dramatic patterns and colours, of which will have you rearranging your entire life to create opportunities to strut your inner Mrs. Roper in one of these creations.

Kaftan realness can be realized faster and closer to home through local designers such as Whitney Westwood's Whitney Linen (www.whitneylinen.com). Her kaftans are all in linen and are inspired by the elegance of Cote d'Azur. Quality dictates pricing, so know that it's money well spent. These are pieces you add to your wardrobe as long term staples, not as a seasonal flash* in the pan.

Higher up on the financial food chain, Gucci's Patchwork Scarf Kaftan in this S/S18 Ready to Wear is worth an honorable mention. It's stunning. Stuh. Ning. It's also $5,585 CD, which I am sure to someone out there is a bargain.

Most retailers have their own versions of kaftans; Zara, Anthropologie, Amazon, to name a few. Wherever you find it; get your summertime cocktail hour kaftan on and create some legendary fashion moments before the sun sets, darling. -xo
